Small holes in wood siding—from pests, old fasteners, or minor impact—are straightforward if the surrounding wood is sound. Seal against water after the patch cures.
Check for rot
Probe around the hole. Soft fiber means a larger cut-out and board repair, not a dab of filler over rot.
Fill small holes
Exterior wood filler or epoxy putty works for fastener holes and tiny punctures. Pack firmly, tool slightly proud, cure, then sand flush with the siding face.
Larger punctures
Back the hole with a wood block if needed, then fill, or scarf in a small Dutchman of matching siding profile for a cleaner paint job.
Prime and seal
Prime bare wood and filler the same day when weather allows. Paint to match. Check that water still sheds over the course; do not create a dam with excess caulk at lap joints.
