Laminate scratches often sit in the wear layer or printed décor paper. Replacing planks is a last resort when color-fill and repair kits can hide the damage.
Know your layer
Surface scuffs that do not break the décor print clean up with laminate-safe polish. Deeper lines that show a lighter core need filler crayons or putty matched to the plank pattern.
Repair kit approach
Clean the scratch. Warm a matching hard wax or laminate putty, press into the line, level with a plastic card, and buff. Some kits include grain pens to redraw pattern across the fill.
When replacement makes sense
Replace a plank if the core is swollen from water, the locking edge is broken, or the scratch field is too wide to disguise. Keep spare planks from the original install when you can.
Prevention
Felt pads, entry mats, and soft chair glides cut most laminate wear. Avoid steam mops that drive moisture into seams.
